This is the gentle introduction to minesweeper: a 9×9 field with only ten mines. Numbers tell you how many mines touch each cell; flags mark suspected bombs.
Your first click never hits a mine — the board generates after you open the first cell.
How to play Minesweeper Beginner
- Left-click to open a cell. A number shows how many mines touch that cell (including diagonals).
- Right-click to flag a cell you believe contains a mine (use your browser’s context menu on touch devices).
- Open every non-mine cell to win. Hitting a mine ends the game.
- Empty cells (zero) auto-expand to reveal neighboring safe areas.
Strategy tips
- When a 1 touches exactly one hidden cell, that cell must be a mine — flag it.
- When a number’s touching cells already have that many flags, every other neighbor is safe to open.
- Start from corners and edges — they touch fewer cells, so deductions are simpler.
- Do not flag randomly; wrong flags hide cells you still need to open.
- Once comfortable here, move to Minesweeper Intermediate for the classic 16×16 board.
Common questions
Is the first click always safe?
Yes. Mines are placed after your first open, with that cell guaranteed mine-free.
