Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is the solitaire most people mean when they say “solitaire”: seven tableau columns, a stock you flip one card at a time, and four foundation piles that build up by suit from ace to king.

On SolitaireFelt the board runs entirely in your browser. Undo is available when you want to test a line without committing to it.

How to play Klondike Solitaire

  • Deal: seven columns with one to seven cards; only the top card in each column starts face up.
  • Tableau: build down in alternating colors (red on black, black on red). You may move a face-up stack if the bottom card fits on the destination.
  • Empty columns accept only a king (or a stack starting with a king).
  • Stock: click to flip one card to the waste. When the stock is empty, click again to recycle the waste.
  • Foundations: build up in suit from ace through king. You win when all 52 cards sit on the foundations.

Strategy tips

  • Uncover face-down tableau cards before you worry about empty columns — hidden cards are the main bottleneck.
  • Move aces and low cards to foundations early, but leave a deuce on the tableau if you still need it to bury a king.
  • Before emptying a column, check whether the king waiting to move there will block a card you still need below another pile.
  • When the stock is cycling, note which ranks you have already passed — repeating the waste without tableau progress usually means try a different column order.
  • Use Undo to replay a stock pass if you realize a waste card should have stayed for a tableau build.

Common questions

Can every Klondike deal be won?

No. Draw-one Klondike has unwinnable shuffles. The goal is to play the deal well; a loss often means the layout was dead, not that you missed the only line.

What is the difference between draw-one and draw-three?

Draw-one turns a single stock card at a time, which is easier and closer to what most casual players expect. Draw-three reveals three cards per click and only lets you play the top waste card — fewer options, tougher odds.
