Gin rummy against a simple computer opponent: draw from stock or take the discard, form sets (same rank) and runs (same suit, consecutive rank), then knock when your unmatched deadwood totals ten or less.
The CPU knocks too — watch its discards for clues about its melds.
How to play Gin Rummy
- Ten-card hands. Draw one card from stock or discard pile, then discard one.
- Sets are three or four cards of the same rank. Runs are three or more consecutive cards in one suit.
- Knock when deadwood (unmelded cards) totals 10 points or less.
- Face cards count ten; aces one; number cards face value.
- Lower deadwood wins the hand after knock.
Strategy tips
- Track discards — if the CPU repeats low cards, it may be avoiding your run.
- Keep middle cards that can join multiple runs (7♦ connects 5-6 and 8-9).
- Knock early when ahead in deadwood — waiting for gin risks the CPU undercutting.
- Do not break a near-meld to chase one card unless the discard proves it.
- High deadwood face cards hurt — dump them unless they complete a meld soon.
