Canfield is an old casino patience game: a thirteen-card reserve feeds the tableau, foundations start at a random rank and wrap (king to ace continues), and the stock flips one card at a time.
It feels like Klondike with tighter constraints and a visible reserve you must manage before it empties.
How to play Canfield Solitaire
- Four tableau columns build down by alternating color.
- Reserve: thirteen face-up cards — only the top reserve card is playable.
- Foundations start from a random base rank (for example, if the base is 7♠, you build 7 through king then ace through 6 in that suit).
- Stock flips one card to waste; empty columns accept kings only.
- Win by moving all 52 cards to the foundations.
Strategy tips
- Watch the base rank immediately — every foundation starts there, not at ace.
- Reserve cards run out fast; use them to unblock tableau columns before the pile is empty.
- Empty columns are for kings — use them to reposition a blocking king stack, not arbitrary cards.
- Do not bury the base rank in deep tableau stacks if you still need to start other suits.
- Wrapping foundations confuse newcomers: remember king is followed by ace on the same foundation pile.
Common questions
Why do my foundations not start with aces?
Canfield uses a random base rank per deal. Each foundation builds upward in suit from that rank and wraps through ace.
